Dear Haydn,

As always, it’s nice to hear from you.

You were right; how come nobody ever asked about the birth of PY school? I guess we all took things for granted.  Thank you so much for sharing the historical document with us.  We would like to publish it, with your permission, on DDS site at a good time. If nothing else, to reiterate the “original idea and goals of the college.”

Incidentally, the correction you made to my write up about U M’s RC system shall also be posted on the web in the next issue, i.e. November 21.

PoYa program at Tunghai is having some headwind lately; not the least of it is the serious budget shortfall, for which PY, Yang Jing-shan and myself are trying to find a long term solution to help.

Welcome back on November 1 and enjoy the event! But I am afraid I won’t be able to meet you this time on the occasion, for reason that I shall disclose in our next encounter.

Please take care and have a great trip!

Robert / tpe

Dear Robert,

As you all are very interested in the continuing development of the PY School at Tunghai, I wish to share with you the first meeting minutes about the establishment of PY School at Tunghai which I chaired back in Sept. 2007 after I spent a few days in PY Chia home to discuss its possibility.  From that day one, PY School was shaping up till today.  In retrospect, the initial plan for the PY School was even more ambitious and forward  looking, however some elements could not be carried out for various reason.

I am at awe in that no one has approached me to talk about the birth of the PY School as I possess many historical documents including the original proposal to PY Chia, etc.

In any rate, I want to share with you the attached the meeting minutes for another reason.  That is the original idea and goals of the College are now being gradually realized at U. Macau.

Best,
haydn

Dear Robert,

Thank you for sharing this article with me and congratulations to the opening of your DDS official site.
As I stated a few times, I am very pleased that you came to meet me at UM and saw what I have been doing in the last three years here, especially the establishment of Residential College System.  There is one correction in the article that I wish to bring up in that it is written 三年了,程校長離開東海,接任澳大副校長,專司澳大的博雅教育課程。 可以說澳大的博雅就是東海的博雅,只不過是放大八倍,全校施行
In fact, the highlighted sentences in red is incorrect as UM has much more put into the RC education and is not simply a multiply of the Tunghai version of the PY College. To help you all understand the complete effort and the content of the RC Experiential Collegiate Learning, the attached pdf file can be more accurate.  There are two major parts of difference, one is the UM 4-in-1 education model in which the “Community and Peer Education” is to be primarily carried out by the RCs.  The second part is the assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes as UM requires every undergraduate student must achieve a passing grade in “Community and Peer Education” before he/she can graduate.  Because of these specific conditions to the UM, the RC system was development based upon “curriculum approach” with well-defined goals, and five areas of competencies, i.e. capability indices, hence each student will undergo continuous assessment over the entire 4 years of study.  More details can be found in the attached pdf file.

Anita and I will be in Tunghai to attend the alumni dinner on 1 Nov, (by the way Master Chung Ling will receive the outstanding alumni award then), and the events on 2 Nov. Hope to meet you there.

All the best,
Haydn
